High School Sailing's National Championship Qualifiers
The Results are in! 20 teams from around the country qualify to represent their districts at the Mallory National Championship!
2013 Interscholastic Sailing Association’s Fleet Racing Championship, hosted this year by Chicago Yacht Club, is scheduled for May 11th – 12th. The 20 top high school teams from around the country who have qualified from their own districts will be coming to Chicago to square off for the championship.
Below are the regatta reports and links to results from each district qualifier. Good luck to all of the teams headed to the finals!

Mallory Midwest Qualifier 2013

SATURDAY APRIL 27
Sailors showed up to Columbia Yacht Club to light winds from the South. As the A-fleet headed out for the first race the wind died and we went under AP until 1:00pm. By that time, the breeze shifted to the North East ranging from 4-8 knots. We were able to complete 3 full rotations. By the end of the day, Oconomowoc was leading by 20 points with Lake Forest and Arrowhead in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
SUNDAY April 28, 2013
The first race started on time at 9:30am. The race committee was able to get in 3 full rotations and one half rotation just before the 2:30pm time limit for the day. The wind was out of the north ranging from 5-10 knots. Before the final scores could be posted, there were 3 protests filed resulting in two disqualifications, and one redress was awarded. Racing was close all weekend and by the last race, Lake Forest ended up winning with 129 points. Oconomowoc ended up in 2nd and Minnetonka in 3rd. Congratulations to the three teams qualifying for the Mallory Championship, and thanks for all the teams for a great weekend of MISSA sailing.

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Beautiful Weekend, Saturday racing delayed for about one hour due to fog and light air. Racing began just after noon as breeze built to 15+ kts out of the WSW. Racing continued until about 5:30pm completing 8A and 6B division races. Sunday racing began on time at 11am in a light southerly that remained for the day. Racing in 4-7 kts we complete another 6B and 4A races for a total of 24 races (12 in each division). Spectating was awesome from the beach and pier at Cabrillo Beach. Many thanks to the volunteers and regatta organizers from Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Congratulation to Point Loma, Cathedral Catholic, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Dos Pueblos High Schools who will represent the PCISA at the High School Dinghy National Championships (Mallory Trophy) in Chicago, IL on May 11-12, 2013.

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: The forecast was picture perfect on Long Island Sound yesterday as Indian Harbor Yacht Club played host to the NE Double-Handed Qualifier; The O’Day Trophy. Winds were light in the morning and gradually built to 10 knots. Both Divisions were able to be on the course at all times due to the support of 30 420s from Greenwich HS, The Brunswick School, and Rye Country Day boats. Great to see other districts pitching in to help others. Thanks MASSA! It was a hard fought close battle all day and results were changing constantly until the last finish. Thanks to Andrew Skirvan (PRO) and his crew for running a great regatta. Thank you to Indian Harbor YC for their awesome hospitality. Congrats to Cape Cod Academy for winning their first NE Fleet Champs., as well to North Kingstown and The Hotchkiss School for their advancement to the Mallory Trophy being held in Chicago.

MASSA

18 schools from MASSA, Top 4 qualify for the Mallory National Championship. First race off at 9:30am in a 5-7 knot westerly and outgoing tide. Breeze stayed consistent until race B2 when it shut off mid-way through the race. Before the next set the breeze turned back on 13-17knots from the NW (from up-river) generating large waves. It soon settled down to a 10-15knot Northwesterly for the next couple of sets. A few breakdowns occurred including, but not limited to, torn sails, a sheared pintle, snapped centerboards downhauls, a flexible rudder, and a snapped tiller extension. Breeze kept shifting right and eventually shut off resulting in a 20-minute delay. The final A set for Saturday was sailed in a 3-5 knot NE breeze with the tide slack. The final B race was sailed in a dying 3 knot ESE breeze and incoming tide. Racing was called for the day ~5:00pm due to lack of wind. Protests and redresses were heard resulting in DSQs and BKDs.

Sunday greeted us with a strong 15-18 knot Northerly, which made conditions quite chilly and choppy. We started with the B race we finished on Saturday to close the set. The breeze steadily decreased throughout the day but stayed more or less consistent in direction, aside from the oscillations which could be large at times. The points were quite close for the top 7 teams coming into the end of the regatta. Overall Severn School emerged victorious with great consistent sailing, followed by Annapolis, Broadneck, and Christchurch School all who qualified for the Mallory Trophy in Chicago. 20 Races total were sailed in a myriad of conditions. There were more breakdowns than acceptable, but overall the regatta was a true test of sailing skill. Thank you for all who helped and contributed. The MASSA Board served as the Protest Committee for the regatta.

At the SEISA Mallory Qualifier Clear Falls High School wins with a commanding 40 points over the Kinkaid High school in second with 56 points.

Top three finishers from SAISA are the Antilles School, finishing first, breaking the tie with Ransom Everglades with a total of 102 points. Third and final qualifying team was St. Thomas Aquinas with 154 points.
